We Caught up with Ms. Olivia Shike, exhibitor of the Grand Champion Barrow at the 2024 Illinois State Fair. Learn more about Olivia below..
What do you do to overcome your obstacles?
As soon as a problem comes up, I am talking it through; whether that’s through prayer, talking to my parents, or conversations with friends. I think my experiences in the barn and in cross country have equipped me with the perseverance to keep my head down and keep pushing through the challenges.
What is your favorite thing about your animal?
I love that even though he was impressive up high and had so much dimension he still was so athletic and square out of his rear skeleton. What I loved most though was how friendly he was and how much he loved getting belly rubs and scratches from people!
What is one thing you had to overcome together?
I showed my pig in showmanship at both the Team Purebred Junior National and at the National Junior Summer Spectacular so when he was young we were really in sync. As he got heavier and fed harder, he lost a bit of his enthusiasm for driving so in the few weeks leading up to state fair we really had to work to get him back to his athletic pace and comfort on the drive. After state fair, he would practically run every time I took him for a walk!
What is at the top of your bucket list?
I really want to go to the NFR or Kentucky Derby someday!
Favorite snack?
Veggie straws or Chex mix
Favorite show day breakfast?
It’s either waffles and bacon or a bagel with cream cheese
