We caught up with Monroe Wolka to talk about her standout Berk gilt and the journey behind the win.

Tell us a little bit about your champion:
My Berk gilt was one that we kept home most weekends as she went through some different phases, but two weeks before Perry something shifted and she started to look pretty special. “Mort” has always been a goofy pig with a big personality!

Who is somebody that helped you achieve this win?
My parents and my older sister, Mya, have helped me so much. In April, our barn burned down, so my dad or my sister drive me to the barn every day so I can work pigs and feed. Chad and Lis Decker have also done so much for me and my family. Whether it’s raising pigs we can win with or allowing us to use their barn while our new one is being built, they always make sure we have the tools we need to be successful.

What was the most challenging homework you had to make up?
The most challenging homework I had to make up was the i-Ready diagnostic test. If you’ve ever had to take one, you know it’s not fun — but it was definitely worth it for the week I had in Perry!

What was a challenge you had to overcome with your champion or at the show?
The cold was the biggest challenge at the show. The barn we were in was pretty open, and it was very cold and windy. Our group spent an hour building tents and putting up tarps and heaters to keep everyone warm and happy.

What’s your go-to snack in the snack tub?
My go-to is Chex Mix!
