We caught up with Chance Hager, exhibitor of the Supreme Champion Breeding Gilt at the 2025 Kentucky State Fair.
What’s your all-time favorite fair food?
My favorite food at the fair is Newton’s Ice Cream!!!
What’s your biggest win or proudest moment so far?
My biggest win yet came at the 2025 Kentucky State Fair, earning Supreme Champion Breeding Gilt!
This was without a doubt one of the proudest moments for my parents and me. I’ve never won a Supreme Champion title at KSF or anything that got me to the Grand Drive on Thursday night — and that’s been one of my biggest goals!
This year was special because it was the first time the KSF included the Gilt Drive on Thursday night with the Market Drive. I’m so glad they made that change — being down there under the lights with my own pig was beyond exciting!
One of my favorite memories from this year was when Judge Nathan Ray was describing my gilt to win the Heavy Weight Division. He said, “She walks like a lady, looks like a lady, and if she could talk, she’d talk like one too!” Then he added, “Young man, your belted cross gilt is Champion!”
That moment is something I’ll never forget. It made all the hard work and long hours in the barn so worth it! It was such an emotional and proud moment for my mom, dad, and me — full of tears, hugs, and high-fives from great friends cheering us on! ❤️
How do you stay motivated during the tough days in the barn?
During the tough days in the barn, I turn on my favorite playlist — it helps me stay calm and focused.
Breaking pigs and getting them to walk the way you want isn’t always easy. Some days test your patience, but consistency is the key! Every single day matters, and the time you put in always shows in the ring!
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a first-year exhibitor?
I’ve learned that perseverance truly pays off. Never give up on your goals — work hard, stay positive, and always be a good sport. Don’t let a loss get you down. Celebrate others’ wins and keep pushing toward your own goals — it will make you stronger!
What do you look forward to most about your state fair?
What I look forward to every year, just as much as showing, is the excitement of being there — seeing all my friends from across Kentucky, helping each other in the barn, and having fun during downtime. Those friendships and memories are the best!!!
