Adam Alfs

We caught up with Adam Alfs, exhibitor of the Nebraska State Fair Champion FFA Market Hog.

What’s your all-time favorite fair food?
Deep-fried Oreos can never disappoint a guy.

What’s your biggest win or proudest moment so far?
It’s hard to pinpoint one singular moment in my show career, but there are two big highlights. The only good thing from the Covid year was a pretty memorable barrow from Sloans that went on an absolute tear — winning jackpot shows in four different states and, most notably, The Recovery in Des Moines. “Merle” was special, but my state fair barrow this year, “Mo,” definitely rivals him hard.

How do you stay motivated during the tough days in the barn?
I stay motivated by keeping the big picture in mind. Nothing in life is easy, so when things aren’t ideal, I focus on the end goal — giving up isn’t an option.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a first-year exhibitor?
You have the choice of who you surround yourself with. Find those people who will support you through it all and help you reach your goals. It’s a lot more fun when you have people to enjoy the journey with you.

What do you look forward to most about your state fair?
The Grand Drive. If it doesn’t give you chills, you probably don’t have the right mindset about showing livestock. It’s that feeling of reaching the finish line and knowing all the hard work paid off.
