We caught up with Mr. Clay Kretzmeier before he steps “Inside the Ring” to sort the gilts at the 2023 Minnesota State Fair. Learn more about Clay below!
Tell us a little about yourself!
I was born and raised in Fowler IN. I grew up showing all species of livestock, but enjoyed pigs the most. After graduating from Purdue University I accepted the position to be the Assistant Livestock Judging Coach at Purdue. With the help from my family I own and operate Kretzmeier Showpigs where we run a dozen Chester, Spot and Crossbred sows. I also work on the family corn and soybean operation.
Who got you involved in the livestock industry and how?
My parents grew up showing livestock, so my sisters and I were all 10 year 4H members. Buying steers from Tom Farrer and pigs from Steve Nichols as a kid is when I realized I wanted to stay in this industry for a long time.
Favorite State Fair Memory:
In 2016 I had the Champion Division 1 Duroc Barrow at Indiana, won spot showmanship, and raised a class winning Chester Barrow my buddy showed.
First State Fair ever judged:
Minnesota
Favorite Fair Food:
Tenderloin so big you have to take a nap afterwards.
Favorite Carnival Game:
Trying to guess the weight on barrows and stay within 15 pounds on showday.
Favorite Carnival Ride:
The shuttle that goes around the Indiana State Fair.
