We caught up with Mr. Cassidy Hayes after he judged the Berk and Crossbred Gilts at the 2025 Winter National. Check out his thoughts below…
What breed stood out as the toughest and deepest?
The dark crossbred show was one to remember! Every class was a battle on the top end and the division drives were absolutely loaded with heat.
What’s one thing you wish this generation of showmen needs to be more aware of?
To be honest, I’d rather spin this into a positive and say that compared to my generation this group of showman are so much more talented at getting the stock driven at an elite level! Their control, whip accuracy, ring composure, skin/hair management, etc has taken showmanship to a totally new realm from where we once were and it’s so fun just to sit back and be a fan of it!
When judging do you ever wonder what the pedigrees are on some of the animals or think I bet that one is a ……. ?
All the time! Usually play a guessing game in my head as I’m judging a show then check myself by asking at the backdrop
Any funny encounters throughout the day?
Just a few jokes with the guys helping in the ring involving some botched paint jobs
What has been the biggest change in the ring since you were an exhibitor?
Back then, great showmanship was an advantage…in 2025, it’s a necessity just to have a fightin’ chance! That along with the obvious: the paint, the adhesive and the big hair. Right or wrong, it’s here to stay.
