We Caught up with Mr. Tate Welch, exhibitor of the 5th Overall Breeding Gilt at the 2024 American Royal. Learn more about Tate below..
What made your champion unique?
Liz, as we called her was spaztic from the start and very cautious about everything. She made me nervous coming in for the Grand Berk drive that day, as the drop of the pen latch made her freeze up and not want to go in the ring. She had the crazy eyes to go along with her attitude and a long freaky neck for a berk gilt.
Favorite quote from the judge about your champion?
Lynsee talked a lot about how my gilt could get up and go, and float around the ring at a quick pace so effortlessly. She said, “this gilt came with the mind that Lynsee Pullen was judging the show…and they have to know how to move them right”.
Biggest challenge you faced getting your barrow/gilt ready for the show?
Finding something to make her to stand still long enough to get her fit right before heading up to the ring.
Somebody you would like to thank:
Jace Tarbell for all the help throughout the year, and Crosby Jackman for giving us honest opinions on the pigs before buying them online when we can’t see them in person.
Favorite whip?
Sullivans Alpha Whip 33”
Favorite thing about this show?
Being in our home state, one of my favorite things about this show is all the family that gets to see us show and hang out back at the pens.
Podcasts or playlists?
Playlists……any music that can get me pumped up and keep me motivated!
Brush in hand or back pocket?
Mix of both, I often show with 2 brushes, one for white and another for unpainted areas.
